Profile

Clive grew up in Southern Ireland. His interest in plants & gardens stemmed from his mother, who to this day is a very keen gardener. Childhood memories are of helping his mother in the garden and his father on a large fruit and vegetable plot. Clive eventually pursued a career in accountancy but never found huge job satisfaction.

Being an outdoors person he dreamed of running his own business creating and maintaining beautiful gardens. This opportunity finally arose when he was made redundant. Based in North London, he studied horticulture and gained an RHS qualification. From there The Constant Gardener took root and now Clive brings his client's gardens to life.

Clive believes that even though gardens need an initial plan, they truly evolve over time. A garden never stands still.

A few tips & hints

What can you put into a composting bin?
Grass clippings, All vegetable matter (not cooked food), Egg shells, Hair clippings, Dust, Lint from tumble dryers, Shredded paper and cardboard (this helps to absorb the decomposing smell)

Do not put citrus fruit or peel (oranges and lemons) into the compost bin as the worms do not like them.

Which plants are good for growing during periods of drought?
Geraniums, Begonias, Gazaneas, Lysimachia, Iris and Agapanthus

This is not a comprehensive list but advice can always be given.

How do I encourage my plants to continue flowering?
The best way to do this is by deadheading. By taking off the dead flower heads the plant will put it's energy into making more flowers. If the dead heads are left on, the plant will put its energy into trying to form seeds.

How do I prevent slugs and snails from damaging my plants?
The most commonly used are slug pellets. Be sure to scatter thinly as these can be harmful to other animals and pets. Nematodes are a biological control, which are not harmful to pets and other animals. Other deterrents are rock granules, eggshells, or copper tapes and rings.

What insects and animals are good for the garden?
Ladybirds, Bees, Moths, Butterflies, Hoverflies, Lacewings, Hedgehogs, Toads, Newts and Birds.

Water saving exercises:
1. Water plants at the base so that the water gets to the roots where they need it most. Water on the plants will evaporate.
2. Water during the cooler parts of the day so that less water evaporates. Best time is after sundown.
3. Get a water butt in the garden and collect rainwater. This will help if you are on a water meter.
4. Mulch your beds and borders. This will reduce water evaporation.
